For travelers attending a concert or live event at the historic Hampton Beach Casino, the Ashworth by the Sea hotel is the perfect place to stay. This century-old venue is as much a part of Hampton Beach’s history as our landmark hotel.
There’s never been any gambling at the Hampton Beach Casino Ballroom, but it’s a sure bet that you will find some of the biggest names in entertainment here every week from April through November. This legendary 19th-century, 2,000-seat performance venue has hosted everyone from B.B. King, Janis Joplin and Ray Charles to Led Zeppelin and Willie Nelson to Jerry Seinfeld, Jay Leno and George Carlin.
Opening its doors on July 15, 1899, the Hampton Beach Casino has been the heart of Hampton Beach and one of New England’s most popular summer entertainment venues for over a century. Despite the absence of gambling, the name is not meant to mislead. The word “casino” is Italian for "summer house" and describes a gathering place where one can dance, listen to music and socialize - and that’s exactly what the ballroom has been for generations of Hampton Beach visitors.
In its early days, the Casino hosted live Vaudeville shows in the Opera House, along with a penny arcade, merry go-round, and a clay pigeon shooting range - complete with live ammunition. During the Roaring 20’s, more than 20,000 people danced in the ballroom each week, while the Big Band Era of the 30’s brought in names like Glenn Miller, Tommy Dorsey, Louis Armstrong, Count Basie, and Duke Ellington. In the 60's, rock 'n roll started to creep into the Ballroom with acts like the Supremes, the Four Tops and the Four Aces. Plus, there were folk acts like the Kingston Trio and Peter, Paul & Mary. Gradually, louder bands appealing to younger ears were added to the schedule -- The Beach Boys, the Fifth Dimension, the Who and the Lovin' Spoonful.
Today, the Hampton Beach Casino enters into its third century on a high note, known as one of the best venues to play by artists and one of the best venues to see a show by fans. During its eight-month season (April - November), the Ballroom continues to draw some of the top names in entertainment. Recently, the Ballroom placed in the top 30 for worldwide ticket sales in venues under 3,000 seats. There’s no doubt that the Ballroom was, is, and always will be New Hampshire's premier entertainment facility.
